Feeling stuck? Maybe you’re approaching your relationship with God the wrong way

Have you ever felt like you’re talking to yourself? You have problems, maybe you even pray or hope for a solution, but all you get is silence. It’s a frustrating feeling, and a universal one. Many of us come to God with a list of requests, as if we were at a store: “Lord, I need this, fix this, give me this.” But what if the approach is wrong?
Sunday’s sermon explored a simple idea that changes everything: maybe we don’t receive answers because we’re too focused on the request and too little on the atmosphere.

Misconception #1: Do you think God needs your praise?
The first myth we need to debunk is that “praise” or “worship” is a favor we do for God, an obligation we check off. The truth is counterintuitive and freeing:
“God really doesn’t need your worship. YOU need worship.”
It’s not about giving Him something He lacks. It’s about positioning yourself in a place where you can receive what He already wants to give you.

The difference that changes everything: Praise vs. worship
We often use these terms interchangeably, but they describe two completely different actions. Understanding the difference is the key.
- Praise: THIS IS YOUR INVITATION
Praise is what you initiate. It is a deliberate act of creating an “atmosphere that is pleasing to God.” Think of it as getting your house ready for a guest of honor. Even if you’re stressed or the house is a mess (meaning your life has problems), you choose to clean up, open a window, put on some pleasant music. That’s what you do through praise: you shift your attention away from your problems and place it on gratitude. - Worship: THIS IS HIS RESPONSE
Worship is what God does in response to your invitation. It’s the moment He steps into the atmosphere you’ve created. It’s His presence filling the room. That’s why “worship cannot be generated by us. It depends entirely on God.” You make the invitation; He brings the transformation.
What happens when He really shows up?
This is where things get really interesting. Your problems are not a barrier to His presence; on the contrary, they become the stage on which His power is put on display. When the atmosphere changes and He is present:
- The noise stops: The Bible says that “when God shows up […], everything stops.” Anxiety, fear, the negative voices – everything has to fall silent in His presence.
- You receive power: The problems you’re going through are not in vain. In His presence, they equip you. You receive “experience,” “power,” and a new ability to solve other problems too, for yourself or for others.
Your next step
If you feel stuck, tired, and without answers, try a new strategy. Before you present God with your list of problems, invite Him into the middle of them.
It doesn’t have to be complicated. Stop for a minute. Ignore what isn’t going well and thank Him for three things that are. Change the atmosphere.
His plan for you is not one of chaos. He promises “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.” He wants to be found; you just have to seek Him with a sincere heart.- Praise: THIS IS YOUR INVITATION
